Welcome to the world of band!!!!
In case you could not make it to the open house, or you lost the letter here is a copy.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Hello, and welcome to another school year. My name is Tyler Heser and I am the 5-12 band and 9 -12 choir teacher at United #7. I am looking forward to a wonderful year with a very excited bunch of students. I will meet with the 5th graders as we start the year and get them going with getting instruments in their hands!
There are several options for you when getting an instrument for your student. First is to go and buy one from a music dealer, but I would suggest that for a beginner, like your student, that you wait on that option as they may decide to change instruments. Second, each music store, Northwest and Jacobson’s, as well as Eckroth in Bismarck, have payment plans and rental options for instruments and I encourage you to get in touch with those stores to get your instruments. The third option is to rent one from the school, and though I wish we had enough instruments for every student we only have a few so we are not able to get one of our instruments in the hands of all of our students that way. Finally, I encourage you to watch the classifieds for used band instruments as there are often great deals on gently used instruments there as well. If you do find an instrument, I would be happy to answer any questions on whether or not it is a quality instrument that your student can be successful with.
Also your student will need to have a book to work from this year. It is Essential Elements 2000, Book 1, the yellow book. These books are available at any of the music stores listed above.
The final piece of business we need to deal with is attire. I require that all band and choir students have black pants and a white shirt for every concert. This is not so say that you need to run out and buy new clothes as I know how fast a fifth grade student grows. Since there are only three concerts I suggest that people look at thrift stores, as I often find both black pants and white shirts there that would do just fine.
I want to thank you in advance for your support of the band and your band student. I wish you well as your child starts what I hope is a life-long musical adventure on their instrument. Thanks again and feel free to contact me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Tyler Heser
