Grading for 5th grade band. This is a class that does not have homework. While it is important that students practice on their own it is not a part of their grade. Band is a group activity therefore it is important that students be in class and participate to the best of their ability. This idea is how I have based my grading. Grades will come from three aspects of the class:
1. Daily participation - If a student is in class and is participating they will receive 5 points for that day. The only way a student will lose points is to not be present or not participate. If a student is losing points due to behavior they will be notified, in class, and given the opportunity to fix their behavior.
2. Also we will have three performances. Each performance will be worth 25 points, or the same as one week of class. As a college choir director told me once in regards to people being at rehearsals and performances, "It is not that you know YOUR part, but that you understand what YOU are a part of." That is true for all performances and rehearsals in this group as well. People are counting on each of us.
I will keep the grades up to date so that students and parents can see if they are lacking so that they might improve.
